Our Story

Kids Against Hunger was founded in March 1999 by Richard Proudfit, a Minnesota businessman with a vision to make a difference in the fight against global hunger. Originally established under the name Feeding Children International, the program "Kids Against Hunger" became the primary identity.

What started as a local initiative has grown into a nationwide network of satellite locations, each dedicated to packaging and distributing nutritious meals to children in need. Over the past 25 years, we have provided over 162 million meals to children and families in more than 65 countries.

Our founder, Richard Proudfit, received the Jefferson Award for Greatest Public Service Benefiting the Disadvantaged in 2012, recognizing his extraordinary commitment to feeding hungry children worldwide.

The vision behind Kids Against Hunger

Richard Proudfit (1938-2018)

Richard Proudfit was a Minnesota businessman whose life changed when he witnessed the devastating effects of hunger during a trip to Honduras. That experience ignited a passion that would lead to the creation of Kids Against Hunger.

Richard believed that ordinary people could make an extraordinary difference in the fight against hunger. His vision was to create a program that not only fed children but also engaged volunteers in meaningful service, allowing them to experience the joy of helping others.

In 2012, Richard received the prestigious Jefferson Award for Greatest Public Service Benefiting the Disadvantaged, recognizing his tireless dedication to feeding hungry children around the world.

Though Richard passed away in November 2018, his legacy lives on through the millions of meals packaged and distributed by volunteers at Kids Against Hunger satellites across the nation.

Our Satellite System

A nationwide network of hunger fighters

How Our Satellites Work

Kids Against Hunger operates through a unique satellite system. Each satellite is an independent nonprofit organization licensed through headquarters to use the KAH name, meal formula, and process.

This decentralized approach allows communities across the United States and Canada to take ownership of the hunger problem, engaging local volunteers and distributing meals both locally and internationally.

  • Each satellite operates as an independent nonprofit
  • Satellite directors determine where meals are distributed
  • Volunteers do the actual meal packaging
  • Goal: 500 packaging centers across all 50 states
  • Currently active in 27 U.S. states and 2 Canadian locations
